对移动飞信的六点建议

October 7th, 2009 Richard 6 comments

Read more…

China Mobile got the first 3G license – TD-SCDMA

January 7th, 2009 Richard 1 comment

cmcc3gFrom insiders, the largest mobile carrier – China Mobile has got the first 3G license at China. Surely, it’s TD-SCDMA.  It’s said that this betrays the determination of China government to respect the self intellectual property and encourage China enterprises to develop their own technologies.

TD-SCDMA is one of the three major 3G international standards, submitted by China enterprises.

It’s reported that China Telecom will get CDMA2000 and China Unicom will get WCDMA soon.

云计算漫谈之“云之初,本无奈” zz

December 24th, 2008 Richard 2 comments

Read more…

China telco re-org schema announced.

May 23rd, 2008 Richard 2 comments

After years of rumors, the final picture of China telco re-org got announced today. It’s somewhat the same as the gossip inside the circle.
China telco reorgChina Netcom(CNC) will be merged into China Unicom to be the new China Unicom. Meanwhile, The “C” and “G” networks of China Unicom will be splitted, while the “C” part will be merged into China Telecom. China Railcom (CRC) will be merged into China Mobile(CMCC).

The executives of the new companies are also mentioned:

  • CMCC – Wang Jianzhou, Zhang Chunjiang(from CNC);
  • CT – Wang Xiaochu, Shangbin(from CUC);
  • CUC – Chang Xiaobing, Zuo Xunsheng(from CNC);

This re-grouping is interlocked with the 3G licenses. It’s said that the new CMCC will get TD-SCDMA, while new CUC will get WCDMA, and CT will get CDMA2000.

It’s interesting to watch back to what I summarized the evolvement of China telecommunication industry in the past 10 years.

China Mobile say no to 802.11i

November 16th, 2006 Richard No comments

China has adopted WAPI as its national wireless access standard in 2003, instead of 802.11i, which lead to furious debate at that time. 3 years passed. According to a report by Xinhua agency, the largest mobile operator in China – China Mobile has conducted a security testing to 802.11i and found security vulnerabilities in it.

Test results to date show that the current WLAN technology 802.11i has big security loopholes and is easy to attack, said Ma Benteng, senior engineer with China Mobile.

The Beijing Olympics will be the first to use WLAN in the Games’ history. Journalists would be major users of the networks.

At a meeting held by China Mobile recently, media users were skeptical about the safety of the current WLAN technology.

Results from more than a month of tests carried out by the national safety research center on information project show that 802.11i has serious technological defects and safety risks, said Ma, who is in charge of mobile planning for the 2008 Olympics.

Researchers said that articles on the technological defects of 802.11i were freely available on the internet, as well as tools for exploiting the defects. The internet also provides methods for decoding the technology.

Anybody who can connect to the Internet could download the software and steal private information from others, said Ma.

China Telecom Evolvement for Ten Years

October 18th, 2005 Richard No comments

1994 is a special year for telecom enterprises at China. Before that year, telecom is a function of the state government, no commercial services and operations. At that year, China Telecom was split off into an enterprise to provide all-telecom-services to the whole country. And at that year, China Unicom was founded to lead in market competition.

2nd year of milestone is 1997. At that year, China Telecom was further split into two parts: China Posts and China Telecom. And at that year, I graduated from Peking University and began to work for China Telecom, Data Communiction Bureau (DCB).

3rd year worthy of attention is 1999, when China Mobile was spin off to a stand alone company. Telecom industry entered into a new era. (BTW, I left DCB at 2000 to find my fortune).

4th year to be mentioned is 2002, when China Telecom was further splitted into two parts: China Netcom (10 provinces at north china) and China Telecom (21 provinces at South China). (Right click to “view image” to see the clearer picture)
